David Cronenbergs Wife, Horse & Conder and Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences !

Got another brilliant show coming up with two of my regulars and a brand new band for GDLI shows!

Probably most of you guy know/have heard of David Cronenbergs Wife & Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences… maybe not? Well DCW have just released their excellent 2nd album and have been one of my favorite bands for a while. Last played for me on The Tamesis and it’s ace to have them down again!

www.myspace.com/davidcronenbergswife

Paul Hawkins is a unique (spend bout a minute trying to spell that!) songwriter that you definitely have to hear! Can’t be arsed to go into a big talk about it but he is truly ace!

And in the main support slot (done this out of sequence!) Is a band who are coming down for their first ever show with me is the excellent Horse & Condor!

Only been going for a short period of time but already played some fantastic gigs at White Heat!

I was gonna get into a whole blurb about them but then I found this excellent interview in Loud & Quiet magazine which pretty much says it all!

http://www.loudandquiet.com/articles/3/814/horse+and+condor

So the show at Queen of Hoxton on the 28th of January 2010 and you can buy tickets for 4pd here! http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/user/?region=gb_london&query=detail&event=365802&interface=

Its also going to be open till 2:00 and me, Gareth from Bearded Magazine & HDM (Vannesa N) are all DJing! Good shit basically!

Sophies Pigeons, Jamie N Commons & Panda Su at Wilmington Arms 19th of February

Sophie’s Pigeons

Performing around the UK since they formed in the summer of 2006. The Manchester quartet have stirred up significant excitement within the North West folk scene, breaking convention and bringing a pop vibe to a popular scene. Armed with glockenspiel, melodica, harmonium, clarinette, piano, vocals and a variety of children’s toys, they have taken their foot-stomping rhythms to some of the UK’s most prestigious underground folk and alternative clubs. With their quick success, and in high demand for an album launch, Sophie’s Pigeons have been snapped up by Red Deer Club to record their first E.P!

“This is one of those releases that’s likely to divide opinion, but it wouldn’t be entirely surprising if Sophie’s Pigeons got bigger labels in a fluster” - Boomkat

“Four rather happily deranged individuals hammering pianos who clearly enjoy what they are doing. Their overall madness and enthusiasm rubs off onto the audience and brings the night to a successful conclusion” - Sandman Magazine 2007

“Sophie’s PigeoNs’ new approach is sounding promising and, thankfully, pushing them away from the lazy Tori Amos comparisons. If their album has more tracks like the splendidly cutting ‘Stars and Garters’ and the toe-tappingly frantic ‘Kissing On The Corner’, it could be something of a leftfield classic” - Chris Long BBC Manchester

“Gauche, exuberant and not afraid to look silly in the name of art, her band, Sophie’s Pigeons, seem perfectly poised to inject some needed flamboyance to a Manc indie scene weighed down with an acceptance of all things humdrum ” - Manchester Evening News

Damo Suzuki and Hyrst at Cafe Oto, 18th of January 2010

I’ve very excited to have ex CAN vocalist and improvisational music legend Damo Suzuki down to play at Cafe Oto on January 18th!

Playing with him is going to be Yuki & Mon-Chan from Bo Ningen, Paul from Stolen Records, Richard from Graan/Drones Club & Ken from Miso Soup!

Also playing on the night is one of my new favorite bands Hyrst. They are a bit hard to pin down but remind me a little of 3rd era Portishead with guy vocals and bit more experimental. Basically is massively good.

Also on the night we are going to have some great sound art and other things of interest. Should be a winner!

Additionally, we are going to have DJ’s from The Quietus down here.

Sons of Noel & Adrian + Alessi’s Ark and O Emperor at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen 27/1/2010

I’m very excited to announce a tour and new EP from one of my favorite bands in the whole country, the truly magnificent Sons of Noel & Adrian!

SONS OF NOEL AND ADRIAN (SONAA) was formed in 2007 by best friends, Jacob Richardson and Tom Cowan. After years of writing and performing togeter in the drunken brewery town of Burton-Upon-Trent both guitar players parted ways as Jacob left for art school in Cornwall and Tom set off to travel across Europe. The pair would re-unite years later on the south-eastern shores of the UK in the creative Mecca of Brighton.

Having long shared a passion for rich, layered and intricate guitar music, the Sons’ deep musical exploration quickly developed into a unique and mesmerizing style, brooding on the dark fringes of folk, crossing genres and quickly setting them apart from their contemporaries. Jacob and Tom’s tumbling guitars are joined by a colourful host of other instruments to create dynamic, textural music that ranges from shanty to Schoenburg, from deep underground to just above the surface.

The self-titled debut was released in late 2008. It quickly sold out and was re-released in April 2009 to general fanfare, triggering a monumental year for the band. After touring twice in support of Mumford & Sons and completing headline tours of the UK and Germany, the band ended the year with a string of high profile shows including the Royal Festival Hall with Laura Marling, the Institute of Contemporary Arts with Peggy Sue and the Barbican with Efterklang & The Britten Sinfonia and Jaga Jazzist.

The band found time in between touring to write their second album Knots, due for release in summer 2010 on Willkommen Records, and record an EP entitled Rivers and a collaboration with Alessi’s Ark. Both of these will be released to coincide with the bands touring together in January.

On tour in January: w/support from Alessi’s Ark & O Emperor on all dates

Their unique folky sound has to been causing a stir in most publications over the last year in Mojo, Plan B, Word and countless online sites including being Drowned in Sounds single of the week this week! Meursault truly are one of the most promising bands for the coming year!

“5/5 ALBUM OF THE MONTH…one of the country’s most promising new bands - a group who in the wondrously evocative Pissing On Bonfires/Kissing With Tongues have created one of Scotland’s records of the year” “Make no mistake, after a spin of this sublime record only one word will pass your lips:magnificent” -THE SKINNY

“this is a beautifully strange and strangely beautiful record. You know, New Favourite Band good. Two singles, both marvellous” DROWNED IN SOUND
