We are VERY much looking forward to having Jimi the Exploder down to DJ for us at The Nest on the 27th of May and if you listen to this exclusive mix for GDLI you can see why!
Here’s his words on the mix:
This mix was done live in one take with 1210s and an Alan & Heath mixer nothing extra, it’s just the way I like to it.
Starting with the LV remix of Kevin McPhee was a no brainer it’s such a killer track and I just love the way the drums kick in after the intro. It’s got a sunny vibe to it and that’s something I wanted to keep going with the next few tracks: the Mau’lin 12” is underrated if you ask me so it had to be included. Shifting on a little I wanted to flip the mood into a jacking 4x4 house direction to bring a bit of energy and Head High is perfect for doing that, euphoric piano rushes and big jacking kick drums digging out an old Thomas Bangalter track from the back of my collection helped with the transition into Maurice Donovan. Taking it in a UK funky direction was surprisingly easy out of that one, anyone would think Maurice was from the UK or something the way those drums work with funky… I couldn’t not play ‘Loose Control’ it still hasn’t reached the shops as a full release and it bangs too hard.
After all that energy I thought taking it down a notch and getting twisted with some seriously out there house was the way to go: Elgato’s tracks seem to bridge that no man’s land between UK funky and more straight up deep house really well, this is a track from the sublime Hessle Audio compilation 116 & Rising and it sounds well nice when blended into one of my favourite house tracks of the year so far ‘Babyluv’ by DJ Qu. The looping strings get me every time and the drums give me that Juke vibe which is why we’re soon off into an Addison Groove track. The final section I had a lot of fun with I’d not played about with 140-ish bits for a little while so dropping some Eski infused tracks from Dark Sky and Desto was just what I needed to kick me off on that flex.
When I think of London for some reason I think of a Silkie beat, so making my way down for this night I thought it would fit just right. It’s a barmy funk fuelled gem that drops right into the latest Berkane Sol 12” from Aleks Zen perfectly, the bass on this one is large to say the least. DJ Q’s remix of Wooo continues the hyperfunk vibes until I decide to tail it off into one of the tracks of the moment ‘Shawty’ to mellow it out then take it deep and twisted for the finisher with one of my favorite producers at the moment Ekoplekz. It’s a pretty mad melodic, analogue synth workout that raps things up nice and tight and the end.
